The Mother of Mercy Girls’ Secondary School, Otolo Nnewi, under the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, has celebrated its 25th anniversary with a colourful ceremony that featured the launch of a ₦200 million jubilee building and unveiling of the Grotto of Our Lady Mother of Mercy.
Established in 1998 by the late Rev. Sistr. Mary Paracleta of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy (DMMM) Congregation, the school is the first secondary institution in Okweluogu Community. Over the years, it has grown into a respected centre of academic and moral development, supported by more than 36 qualified teachers.
Welcoming guests at the event, the Principal, Rev. Sister. Ifennama Okafor, described the silver jubilee as a celebration of “God’s faithfulness, academic excellence and moral formation.”
She recounted the school’s journey through financial constraints and infrastructural challenges, noting that its progress had been driven by resilience, teamwork and divine guidance.
She appreciated the Okweluogu Community, including the Obi, the town leadership and residents for standing behind the institution; pointing out that the jubilee building and newly blessed grotto represent “visible signs of faith, unity and community commitment.”
She also acknowledged the former and current staff, parents, alumni and benefactors, while extending gratitude to the Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Jonas Benson Okoye, for his consistent support.
A major highlight of the event was the recognition of notable individuals who have supported the school’s development, particularly in the area of financial contributions.
Among those honoured were Sir & Mrs. Samuel Ezema, the Production Manager, OTC Group of Company; Hon. Ebuka Chukwuka, former Rivers State Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Whiteman Ik Udoyibo; Chief Emmanuel Azuka (Anughara Mayor of Ukpor, Akuenwebe of Ukpor) and Mr. Donatus Ayasa, among others.
The awardees expressed gratitude for the honour and pledged to continue supporting the school and prayed for sustained growth and God’s blessings upon the institution.
Chairman of the Planning Committee, Engr. Udoyibo Ikenna Samuel, the CEO, Engr. Whiteman Ik. Udoyibo Enterprise BCC, commended the organisers and guests for making the event a success.
He opined that the Silver Jubilee would pave the way for further expansion, increased enrolment and long-term plans that could see the school evolve into a higher institution in the future and prayed for divine support to complete the jubilee building.
Several parents, which include: Mr. Chinedu Igboameze, Lemejus Ike, Mr. Jude Ezeagu, Chief Sir George Igwenagu, Mr. Okwudili Nwafor and Mr. Onyebuchi Chukwu, described the school as a beacon of excellence.
They equally prayed for its continuous growth and wished their children academic success, wisdom and good health.
Highlights of the event include: awards presentation and the graduation of its final-year students, among others.
